Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou arrested in Canada says Canada's Justice Deptartment

Canadian authorities said Wednesday that they have arrested the chief financial officer of China's Huawei Technologies for possible extradition to the United States.

The arrest of Wanzhou also adds pressure on Huawei, which has faced global backlash, with a number of nations banning the use of Huawei gear for 5G rollouts. Canadian Justice Department press representative Ian McLeod confirmed Wanzhou's court hearing is scheduled for Friday.

The ministry added it could not provide further details due to a publication ban that was sought by Meng.

Meng is now facing extradition to the United States.

The Wall Street Journal reported in April that American authorities are investigating whether the Chinese tech company violated sanctions on Iran. American prosecutors are seeking to have her moved to the USA as it investigates whether the company broke trade sanctions against Iran.

Officials for the Canadian and US Justice Departments did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Huawei said it had little information about the charges and was "not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms Meng".

"The company believes the Canadian and US legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion".

The handset and telecommunications equipment maker said it complies with all applicable export control and sanctions laws and U.S. and other regulations.

USA lawmakers have also repeatedly accused the company of being a threat to United States national security, arguing that its technology could be used for spying by the Chinese government.

The Wall Street Journal notes that US authorities want to bring Meng to federal court in the Eastern District of NY.

A foreign ministry spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said then that China hoped the USA would refrain from taking actions that could further undermine investor confidence in the US business environment and harm its domestic economy.

The NPRM had suggested that Universal Service Fund (USF) funding not be spent on "equipment or services from suppliers that pose a national security threat to the integrity of communications networks or the communications supply chain", with the FCC including direct references to Huawei and ZTE.

News of the arrest came on the same day that BT announced it would be removing Huawei-manufactured equipment from its 3G and 4G mobile networks.

Canada is yet to take any action against the Chinese company's 5G technology.

Although Huawei sought to distance itself from Skycom, investigative journalists found close connections between the two companies.
