Google confirms Allo dies in March 2019, wants people to get Messages

Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are getting RCS'Chat on Verizon starting December 6

Many U.S. carriers have already announced plans to embrace RCS and some even added support for the messaging service to a couple of phones.

Update: Google has confirmed in a blog post that it will shut down Allo by March 2019. They claim Allo will be shut down "soon", but the announcement may have been delayed due to the previous report about Hangouts. "Given Messages' continued momentum, we've made a decision to stop supporting Allo to focus on Messages", Klainer wrote on Thursday.

The company first launched Google Allo back in 2016, offering some interesting functionality for the time.

After a couple of new reports attempted to share Google's timeline for shuffling around its messaging apps, possibly killing a couple of them, the company chose to explain their plans in their own words. It hasn't received a major update in nearly one year and most of the Allo team has been moved to Android Messages.

And about that word: "plan" - it seemed that was always something lacking relative to Google's fractured and disparate messaging-related properties, such that it's never had one single strong product that could credibly rival something like iMessage.

Allo will continue to work through March 2019 and until then, you'll be able to export all of your existing conversation history from the app-here are instructions on how to do so. Well, do you still use Google Allo service?

Google Duo, the video calling counterpart to Allo, is sticking around.

With Android Messages Chat, you're no longer limited to 160 characters.

As for Hangouts, the venerable chat app that launched with Google+, the company basically confirmed it would go away at some point last week, with users being "upgraded" to the Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet services now available for businesses. We know that's happening, we just don't know when. These are just some of the new enterprise features coming for Google's G Suite customers, with more to come in the future. Some users are unable to "heart" posts while others are experiencing issues with undelivered messages.
