As of right now, there are no plans to launch the phone in the USA, but that could change.

The frame of the phone is made out of anodized aluminum with a two-tone finish, available in Blue / Silver, Steel / Copper and Iron / Steel. We can thus expect the smartphone to make its way to India this month as well. The smartphone's highlight is its 5.84-inch FullHD+ notched display, with a resolution of 1080×2280 pixels, and a 19:9 aspect ratio.

Being a Nokia device the 8.1 ships with Android One launching on Android 9.0 Pie. Up front, there's a 20-megapixel selfie camera.

Like it did with the Nokia 7 Plus, HMD is also touting cameras on the new Nokia 8.1 as it sports Zeiss optics. The rear camera comes with features such as Optical Image Stabilization, Electronic Image Stabilization, dual PDAF, AI scene detection and optimization for low-light photography.

The Nokia 8.1 is powered by a Snapdragon 710 chipset with 4GB of RAM. This smartphone supports microSD cards up to 400GB large - and it's got a headphone jack too. The dual 13MP/5MP rear sensor with electronic video stabilisation helps ensure you film steady, sharp videos and perfectly capture your special moments with friends. The company is also touting the presence of 18W fast charging.

By shipping with Android Oreo™ out of the box, you'll be able to enjoy the latest features, including Google Lens, picture-in-picture for multitasking, Google Play Instant to discover and run apps with minimal friction, and battery-saving features like limiting background app use. The handset measures 154.8x75.76x7.97mm and weighs 178 grams.

The Nokia 8.1 is similar in design and hardware to the China-only Nokia X7. Now, they're some great starting specs, but without a Snapdragon 8 series processor it's never going to be considered a flagship by the wider tech community, regardless of how well it may perform. The Nokia 8.1 utilises the latest display technology which HMD calls Pureview display technology.
