Authorities are investigating the disappearance of a Florida woman who mysteriously vanished during her birthday trip to Costa Rica.

According to relatives, Stefaniak was celebrating her 36th birthday in Costa Rica. The body was wrapped in plastic bags and half-buried in a mountainous, wooded corner of the resort's property. He and other family members were awaiting a call from the morgue on Tuesday for news on the identity of the body that was found. They said the body was found almost 1,000 feet from the property and had signs of blunt force trauma to the head and injuries caused by a blade to the neck and upper extremities.

"Solving this case is very important for the country, very important for the family of the victim", explained Walter Espinoza, spokesperson for Costa Rica's judicial investigation department, "and it is very important for this society in general".

A U.S. State Department official said Monday that the department was aware of a missing U.S. citizen in Costa Rica and is working with local authorities in their search efforts. She Facetimed a friend in NY, telling him she was going to ask the security guard to buy her a bottle of water. Authorities confirmed that the body was likely Stefaniak shortly after.

Martinez was staying in Apartment 7 and Stefaniak was in Apartment 8, where blood was found, Espinoza said.

He said a security guard at the property had been arrested.

The father and brother of Carla Stefaniak identified the body as the 36-year-old Tuesday night. She was staying at a villa she found on airbnb.

Authorities have confirmed that a Florida woman who disappeared last week while vacationing was killed. In recent years, reviews have been mainly negative. A Gofundme account says Stefaniak was last heard from around 8 p.m. on November 27. The driver waited 50 minutes for Stefaniak before taking her on a tour of San Jose.

Back to Carlos. On Monday, learning of the find, he told Telemundo 51 he was hopeful to get permission from US immigration to travel to Costa Rica.

The last message her family had from her was: "It's pretty sketchy here".

"It's raining hard, power went off".

"She's a great person". The next day, Stefaniak failed to show up for her flight home and hasn't been heard from since.

Meanwhile, Stefaniak's family said that they were facing difficulty securing permission from the Costa Rican government to see her remains.

Family also contacted the AirBnB host, who said a guard told them Stefaniak got into an Uber and left with her bags around 5 a.m. on November 28. Her companion flew home to Tampa a day early to get a better deal on the airfare, Jaime said. "That's the last we heard from her".

"That's when we knew that something's not right", Burton said. "Carla wouldn't wake up at 5 a.m. for nothing". He said, "To be totally honest...we didn't get vibe that something had happened".
