According to Fletcher, Valbuena and Castillo played in a Venezuelan league game Thursday night. Both played for the team on Thursday before the accident. He last played for the Angels during the 2008 season, but was released in August. He hit.199 with a.253 on-base percentage, a.335 slugging percentage, nine homers and 33 RBIs in 96 games for Los Angeles this year.

"We are saddened by the tragic news that Luis Valbuena and former major leaguer Jose Castillo have died in a vehicle accident", Major League Baseball said in a tweet.

Valbuena turned 33 on November 30.

Valbuena played 11 seasons in the majors, beginning his career in 2008 with the Seattle Mariners. He recorded a.226 batting average with 114 home runs and 367 RBI during his career.

Luis Valbuena, a free agent who played with the Angels in 2018, and Castillo, an infielder who spent last season with the Giants and Astros, were involved in the fatal auto crash Yaracuy.

Carlos Rivero, who played briefly with the Red Sox in 2014, was injured. He had four hits in seven at-bats with a walk during the late-August/early September appearances.

He was in the minor leagues in the United States as recently as 2017, playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks' Triple-A Reno affiliate.
