MLB Rumors: Phillies trading for Jean Segura

Phillies, Mariners Nearing Deal Centered Around Jean Segura

The Seattle Mariners have traded infielder Jean Segura, along with pitchers James Pazos and Juan Nicasio to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for infielders Carlos Santana and J.P. Crawford. They'd probably be better off prioritizing Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, as offense was a big issue for the team last season.

That's why it shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that the team's first big move of the offseason is expected to be one of many. He had been up and down in the Phillies organization and thought once touted as one of their top prospects, he had fallen out of favor somewhat.

Nicasio, who threw two games for the Phillies in 2017 after getting claimed off waivers by the Pirates, and Pazos are bullpen pieces, but it's Segura that is the centerpiece of the deal for Philadelphia. While Segura is only 28, he's been traded three times, having previously played for the Los Angeles Angels, Milwaukee Brewers, and Arizona Diamondbacks before going to the Mariners. Of his 1,080 swings, 527 were put in play, giving him the ninth-best contact rate at 48.8 percent. Along with what he brings to the table offensively, Segura will be a hell of a defensive upgrade over Crawford, who struggled to stay healthy this past season and will allow Kingery to possibly return to his natural position at second base. The Long Beach native was selected by the Phillies 16th overall in the 2013 MLB Draft and has 72 games of experience in the Majors.

In an Instagram post, Crawford thanked the Phillies organization and Phillies fans for "the inspiration to work as hard as I do, day in and day out".

Shortstop was a place Phillies General Manager Matt Klentak was not happy with last season.

Segura is owed $60 million through the 2022 season.

Crawford, 23, hit.214 with three homers and 12 RBIs over 49 games last season with the Phillies. Adding Segura to the picture still leaves the Phillies options if Machado chooses the City of Brotherly Love.
