The big tech companies actually don't fare all that well in the list of best places to work.

The drop in Facebook's ranking comes after a rocky year for the company.

One Googler in NY notes that the company's growing pains include "bureaucracy, slow to respond to market threats, bloated teams, cross-divisional tension, though nothing remotely approaching Microsoft's internal tension".

Meanwhile, 29 tech companies made Glassdoor's list of the top 100 places to work, more than any other industry.

Jobs and recruiting site Glassdoor has announced its annual list of The 100 Best Places to Work in 2019, based on employee reviews and ratings.

Bain & Co. topped the list, while Facebook fell to the seventh rank.

"In today's tight labour market, job seekers are in the driver's seat when it comes to deciding where to work and they want to know the inner workings of a company before accepting a new job", said Dr. Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor Chief Economist. Starting wages are above California's minimum wage requirements, and the company also offers eligible employees benefits and access to retirement plans. An In-N-Out database administrator said, "They offer great training and have a great support structure", while a software engineer at Procore reported opportunities for career growth. Glassdoor publishes job listings and also has a separate "employer brand" service where employers tout their company on a website that sits on Glassdoor alongside any reviews.

Search giant Google came in eighth place in 2018, following a stronger performance the year prior (fifth). Bain & Company, Google and Apple are the only companies to make Glassdoor's list of 100 companies all 11 years. Workers' concerns - and protests - over how the military could use Google's technology contributed to executives' decision to pull a bid for a $10 billion cloud contract with the Pentagon.

Athletic apparel company Lululemon ranked ninth, with an employee rating of 4.4. The global management consultancy was lauded by employees for things such as a supportive work environment and its compensation for employees in the reviews that form the basis of the ranking.

Employee reviews cited the company's culture and community events as pluses.
