Another person familiar with the terms said the contract is for $140 million. Neither pitcher would command the kind of money that Corbin received, and both have pitchers have already worn pinstripes.

That's right, the Nationals came into the conversation earlier today and pulled the rug out underneath teams like the Yankees and Phillies, leaving clubs scrambling to be the first to the next best free agent starter.

The mighty Yankees are a World Series caliber team; the problem is the competition is so great, that the Yanks might need to make a move or concede to a steady dose of Wild Card finishes. Happ had a 3.18 ERA in 2016 and a 3.53 ERA in 2017. They each had successful second-half campaigns when they were each traded within the AL East, and Eovaldi delivered gutsy performances for the Red Sox throughout the postseason.

Although Corbin won't be pitching for the Sox next season, the franchise can still target other free agent starting pitchers this offseason. It would not be a huge surprise to see him stay with the Yanks as he posted an impressive 7-0 record with a 2.69 ERA.

Happ and Eovaldi essentially represent a backup plan.

The 29-year-old pitcher has a chance to compete for a rotation spot after going 3-8 with a 6.79 ERA for Texas in 12 starts and 27 relief appearances. Billy Witz says the Yankees offered five years and $100M, but wouldn't tack on the sixth year, so to Washington he goes.

Adding a left-handed pitcher is one of the many things on Matt Klentak's to do list this offseason, and he's been vocal about making this move after the organization went almost two seasons without a start from a lefty. Corbin was an NL All-Star selection in 2013 and this year; Scherzer has been picked for each of the past six Midsummer Classics; Strasburg has made it three times. Keuchel only had 154 strikeouts.

According to Jon Morsi of the MLB Network, the Phillies have had discussions with the San Francisco Giants about a trade for pitcher Madison Bumgarner.

Corbin ranked high on the wish list of the Yankees, who have already acquired Mariners left-hander James Paxton and are looking to add another impact starter.
