Former FBI chief Comey arrives for GOP interview

Democrats weren't pleased either, but for a different reason.

The president has repeatedly blasted Mueller's probe as a "witch hunt", and on Friday unleashed a Twitter tirade against Mueller, Comey and other current and former officials tied to the Russian Federation probe.

"This is a waste of time to start with", Nadler said outside the hearing room, according to the Associated Press. "The entire goal of this investigation is to cast aspersion on the real investigation, which is Mueller". Comey was in charge of both investigations.

Congressman Darrell Issa said he wanted answers about what he called the "fake dossier", a 2016 intelligence report including opposition research that alleges misconduct and ties between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

"The Department of Justice is going to have to agree to allow him to come back and answer a great many questions that now he is not answering", he said.

President Trump fired Comey in May 2017, prompting Comey to leak memos documenting statements by the president in which he purportedly demanded Comey's loyalty and suggested Comey curtail the investigation into Flynn.

A key focus of questioning from lawmakers, Fox News is told, was Comey's decision to draft the 2016 statement recommending against filing criminal charges in the Clinton email probe before the former secretary of state was even interviewed, as well as the apparent political bias demonstrated in a slew of text messages and leaks by top Federal Bureau of Investigation officials. Democrats on the committees have usually come to the witnesses' defense to explain their quotes in context.

Strzok defiantly fought with angry Republican lawmakers in a riveting hearing that featured Strzok reading aloud from his sometimes-lewd texts and Democrats openly yelling at their Republican counterparts.

"When you read the transcript you'll see that we're talking again about Hillary Clinton's emails for heaven's sake, so I'm not sure we need to do this at all", Comey told reporters after testifying before the House Judiciary and House Oversight committees. President Trump's campaign chairman, top campaign aide, former national security advisor and longtime personal attorney are all cooperating in the inquiry, which the president calls a "witch hunt".

The hearing wrapped up shortly after, when it was supposed to end around 5 p.m. ET.

As he walked down one of the Capitol corridors, he was asked about Trump's morning Twitter claim that he is "best friends" with special counsel Robert Mueller - part of Trump's attack that Mueller is 'highly conflicted'.

In June, Inspector General Michael Horowitz said Comey broke from usual procedures in his handling of the Clinton investigation, and he should have sought approval from senior Justice Department officials before.

He fought the subpoena in court but eventually agreed to appear only if the questioning was made public.

"Don't do it in a dark corner and don't do it in a way where all you do is leak information", said Comey's attorney, David Kelley. Both Goodlatte and South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy, the chairman of the oversight panel, are retiring at the end of the year.
