Goodbye, Allo: Google's messenger also closes its doors

Duo, the video chat service that launched in 2016 alongside Allo, is still going strong and adds the ability to quickly leave a video message.

In a turn of events pretty much everyone outside of Google saw coming, the search giant is apparently poised to wind down its Google Allo messaging app, with an announcement coming "soon". This has been conveyed through an official blogpost by the company and those users who wish to export their chat history will be able to do so till then.

Eight months ago, Google, via Anil Sabharwal, Vice President of Chrome, Comms, and Photos at Google, announced that it stops investing money in Google Allo because the app is not as popular as the company expected.

In March of past year, we announced plans to evolve classic Hangouts to focus on two experiences that help bring teams together: Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet. Which ultimately made Google "pause investment" back in April after it lost Allo's lead to Facebook, and now ultimately shutting it down for good.

And most of all, why is Google abandoning its own instant message service in Allo and Hangouts for a carrier-driven ball of confusion? Duo still has seen an increased adoption, pushed by Google's aggressive marketing of the product and a smooth video calling experience.

Google has built many products over the year to improve communication between people as it is on elf the most import part of one's life.

In summary, Google's messaging strategy is as follows: If you're a consumer, Android messages will support both Chat, an IP messaging. We're fully committed to supporting Hangouts users in the meantime. The forthcoming turn down of "Hangouts classic" may be more astonishing to the majority of its devoted users, be that as it may. However, the main reason Allo's closure is noteworthy in my mind is that it was the first use case for the Google Assistant. The platform included a number of features geared around making the app smarter which, if used excessively enough, meant you wouldn't even have to message someone yourself.
