Police said they are still looking for Grace, 22, who was last seen in the city on December 1, although evidence suggested she had been killed. "At this point, we hold grave fears for her safety".

"Grace is now longer alive, this is now a murder investigation", said Detective Inspector Scott Beard of Auckland city police.

Grace was last seen wearing a black dress with white sneakers on Queen Street, in Auckland's CBD, at around 9.41pm last Saturday.

This afternoon police said they had assessed Millane's property left at the backpackers where she was staying - and found some items missing.

He added: "I know that the thoughts of all New Zealanders will be with Grace's family tonight".

Grace Millane - a 22-year-old woman from Essex, UK - arrived in New Zealand on November 20 as part of a year-long holiday.

Searches have also been carried out at the backpackers' accommodation.

The graduate's birthday was on Sunday but she did not contact her family.

'He was brought back to the Auckland Central Police Station and is now speaking to us in relation to the murder of Grace Millane.

Police had spoken to Millane's family this afternoon, Beard said.

Earlier on Saturday police released images of her necklace and watch and urged anyone who recognised the items to come forward.

Asked if the pair had met on the Tinder dating app, the detective said: "I'm not going to speculate on how they met".

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said a scene examination at the hotel is continuing and investigators were progressing with the viewing of hundreds of hours of CCTV footage.

DI Beard confirmed that the man being questioned by police on Saturday was the same individual.

A tearful David Millane appealed to the public to come forward with any information, "no matter how small".

Photos on her Instagram showed she travelled to Cape Reinga with friends before returning to Auckland.

"We've spoken to David [Grace's father] we've met him, but there is family in the United Kingdom and our hearts go out to them as well". "Our thoughts are with her family at this bad time".

"Grace is a lovely, outgoing, fun-loving, family-orientated daughter".

"The family are devastated, everybody who is a parent out there will understand what this family is going through".

The father of a British backpacker missing in New Zealand has made an emotional plea for help in finding his "lovely, outgoing" daughter.
