Putin challenged: United States missile destroyer sailed near Vladivostok

Just last week, the United States sent the USS Chancellorsville, a guided-missile cruiser, near the Paracel Islands in the South China Sea to similarly challenge China's "excessive maritime claims", the Navy said.

"Russia's unprovoked assault on Ukrainian naval vessels within the Black Sea close to the Kerch Strait is a harmful escalation in a sample of more and more provocative and threatening exercise", the Pentagon stated in a press release, explaining the maneuver.

"What is more, during all its passage through the global waters, the United States destroyer was moving under control of the Russian Admiral Tributs large anti-submarine ship, which was in close proximity, as well as of the Pacific Fleet naval aircraft", Konashenkov said.

The US Navy sent a warship to challenge Russia's maritime claims in the East Sea/Sea of Japan on Wednesday amid rising tensions between the military superpowers.

The last United States ship to enter the Black Sea was the fast transport ship USNS Carson City in October.

The freedom-of-navigation was similar to those that the U.S. regularly conducts in the South China Sea, often provoking China.

The US is required to notify Turkey about the passage through the straits under the Montreux Convention, a 1936 treaty that governs the passage of military vessels through the Bosporus and the Dardanelles, which connect the Mediterranean to the Black Sea.

The U.S. Navy noted that it is positioning itself to be able to respond to threats against its interests in the Black Sea.

The official representative of the US Navy clarified that the United States does not recognize the claims of the Russian Federation in the sea of Japan.

It also comes as the United States and Russia clash over a number of issues, including accusations by Washington that Moscow has violated terms of the 1987 Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), and USA complaints over recent Russian military operations near Ukraine.

Russian Federation engaged in a confrontation on November 25 with Ukrainian vessels around the Kerch Strait, which links the Azov Sea and the Black Sea.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo subsequently announced that the USA would begin the process of withdrawing from the treaty in 60 days should Russian Federation not come back into compliance.

The U.S. has regularly challenged China's claim to sovereignty in the South China Sea with regular sailings and air flights in the region, much to the displeasure of Beijing.
