Nauert would replace current ambassador Nikki Haley, who plans to leave her post at the end of the year, according to Bloomberg News.

Trump also announced on Friday that he was appointing William Barr - who served as attorney general under the late President George H.W. Bush - as the next head of the Justice Department.

Nauert, a native of Rockford, Illinois, worked at State as the acting undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs.

She mocked Muslims in a 2016 tweet that linked to a New York Times story about Muslims' concerns over then-presidential candidate Trump.

The president picked Nauert after considering other potential nominees including former White House aide Dina Powell, ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft, former U.S. Senate candidate John James of MI and ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell - who was a favorite of National Security Adviser John Bolton.

Ms. Nauert's profile became more visible after Mr. Tillerson was sacked in March.

The state department has made no comment.

When Nauert's name came up last month as a potential replacement for Haley, Trump praised her.

Ahead of the vote, the USA ambassador sent a letter to all UN missions to make clear that "the United States takes the outcome of this vote very seriously".

She will need confirmation by the Senate, where Trump's Republican Party enjoys a majority.

Trump to name Heather Nauert as UN ambassador tomorrow, reports say

FILE - State Deptartment spokesperson Heather Nauert, left, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speak with reporters in his plane while flying from Panama to Mexico, Oct. 18, 2018.

She has been touted for the post since November.

As for Nauert, a former Fox News Channel host, Gingrich said she's a "very solid pick" for United Nations ambassador.

The president is weighing a number of other end-of-year staff changes, including replacing Chief of Staff John Kelly, two of Trump's advisers said yesterday.

Like Haley, a former SC governor, Nauert would come to the job with little experience in diplomacy. However, she quickly learned key issues and how the United Nations operates.

"With Pompeo more firmly in control and Bolton focused on his anti-multilateral agenda, there's a sense the U.S. ambassador will have less clout", Gowan said.

"I can promise you what I will be doing is campaigning for this one".

Because of her work at the State Department, Nauert would have the advantage of already knowing the Trump administration's position on all major global issues.

Haley has had the task of promoting Trump´s "America First" agenda as the United States pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal, the Paris climate accord, the UN Human Rights Council and other agreements and institutions broadly supported by the 193 members of the United Nations.
