Winter Solistice 2018: Google Doodle celebrates the shortest day of the year

The winter solstice is almost upon

For those living in the Northern Hemisphere, Dec. 21 marks the beginning of the longest night of the year - and, of course, the shortest day. In Dallas-Fort Worth, Friday's sunrise will be at 7:25 a.m., with sunset at 5:24 p.m. The day and time of the solstice vary every year. In the Northern Hemisphere, it occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, which is located at 23.5° south of the equator and runs through Australia, Chile, southern Brazil, and northern South Africa.

In 2018, the Cold Moon falls shortly after Friday's winter solstice and the peak of the Ursid Meteor Shower.

The Ursids meteor shower will be visible tonight. Eastern Time while the winter solstice will happen December 21, but to the average eye, the moon will appear full for several days. This year the meteoric display is expected to double, although it might be harder to see with the brightness of the full moon, according to Space.com.

If the weather obscures the sky and blocks out the moon on the night that it is full, onlookers can head outside and look to the sky the night before or the night after as it will still appear to be full.

In India, winter solstice will take place at 3.53 a.m. on December 22 and will be marked by a host of religious observances and celebrations.

A solstice is when the sun either reaches the highest or lowest point in the sky depending on where you are in the world. China marks the start of winter with the Dongzhi festival, during which families come together and enjoy rice balls called tangyuan.

Some Scandinavian and Germanic peoples in northern Europe celebrate with Yule, a day of gathering and gift giving. The treat is said to bring prosperity and unity.
