Photo provided by the China National Space Administration on January 4, 2019 shows image of Yutu-2, China's lunar rover, at preset location A on the surface of the far side of the moon. While the USA, Russia and China have all successfully landed spacecraft on the side of the moon that faces earth, China alone has just landed on the "far" or "dark" side. The country hopes to begin operating its third space station by 2022, and put astronauts on a lunar base sometime in the next decade.

Top officials of the Chinese Space Program have come out this week and expressed their skepticism that the American Moon landings ever happened, reports the Beijing Daily Express.

Unlike the near side of the moon, which offers many flat areas to touch down on, the far side is mountainous and rugged.

Legend has it that Chang'e, after swallowing a magic pill, took her pet and flew toward the moon where she became a goddess and has lived with the white jade rabbit ever since.

It was not until 1959 that the Soviet Union captured the first images of the moon's mysterious and heavily cratered far side.

The rover will also conduct mineral and radiation tests, the China National Space Administration has said.

The Chang'e-4 lunar probe was launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China on December 8, 2018, and entered orbit around the Moon five days later. Because the moon blocks direct communication from the far side, to transmit images from the probe back to earth, China had to build a separate relay satellite. The rover's instruments have to withstand those fluctuations and it has to generate enough energy to sustain itself during the long night. After receiving the order, Yutu-2, atop the probe, extended its solar panel, stretched out its mast and started to drive slowly to the transfer mechanism, said the Beijing Aerospace Control Centre.

Chang'e-4 landed in Von Karman crater, a 112-mile (180 km) wide crater located within an even larger impact crater known as the South Pole-Aitken Basin. China last year launched more rockets into space than any other nation and plans another moon landing, the Chang-e 5, later this year.
