Woman in Vegetative State Gives Birth in Long Term Care Facility

"But I can't believe someone receiving that level of constant care wasn't recognized as being pregnant prior to the time she delivered".

A Hacienda HealthCare spokesman said the organisation was co-operating with authorities.

Phoenix police are pursuing DNA samples from every male employee at a private care facility where a patient in a vegetative state recently gave birth.

"As an organization, Hacienda HealthCare stands fully committed to getting to the truth of what, for us, represents an unprecedented matter", David Leibowitz, spokesman for Hacienda HealthCare, said in a statement to the Washington Post.

Hacienda has been under intense scrutiny since the 29-year-old Native American woman had the healthy baby boy December 29, the station said.

The facility, which has room for over 50 patients, is now under investigation by police and the Arizona Department of Health Services.

Family members of other patients fear there may be more victims at Hacienda HealthCare, which has a history of patient mistreatment.

Police are now investigating the case as a potential sexual assault with an anonymous source telling the outlet that staff at the facility did not know the woman was pregnant. It's not known if the woman has a family or a guardian.

In a statement, board member Gary Orman said Hacienda "will accept nothing less than a full accounting of this absolutely horrifying situation".

She said no one reported that incident exclusively out of fear, and she believes there's been other abuse throughout the years. It is also unclear if staff members at the Hacienda de Los Angeles facility were unaware of the pregnancy until the birth.

"This matter is now under investigation by the Phoenix Police Department", Sergeant Tommy Thompson told Reuters when asked about the media reports.

On Friday, KPHO-TV reported claims from sources that a woman in the facility who had been in a vegetative state after almost drowning more than a decade ago had given birth to a baby boy in December. "I haven't been able to sleep good at night because of what occurred here", another mother, Angela Gomez said.

The Hacienda facility serves infants, children and young adults who are "medically fragile" or have developmental disabilities, according to the website.

The Arizona Department of Health Service and the Arizona Department of Economic security have also released statements and both organisations are conducting investigations into the incident and conditions at the facility.

One staff member was sacked for making repeated inappropriate sexual comments to patients.
