Ministers warned over second Brexit referendum vote

Theresa May suffers defeat to no-deal Brexit powers as MPs vote to pass amendment on Finance Bill

Theresa May suffers defeat to no-deal Brexit powers as MPs vote to pass amendment on Finance Bill

Even the elected Parliamentary representatives are having a hard time making up their mind on whether to support the beleaguered British Prime Minister May in her latest battle with bureaucrats' in Brussels.

Yesterday Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the European Union assurances would arrive, but MPs begin debating on the deal in parliament today ahead of next Tuesday's vote.

The report was backed by Lord Kerr of Kinlochard, a former head of the diplomatic service who helped draft the Article 50 withdrawal process, who said he believed the European Union would "willingly" agree to a postponement of the March 29 Brexit date to allow a fresh referendum.

However 209 MPs from across the Commons have now signed a letter to the PM urging her to rule out a no-deal Brexit.

"However, it is the duty of a responsible Government to continue to prepare for all eventualities and contingencies, including a possible no deal.

We are leaving the EU on the 29th of March this year, because that's what Article 50 says, that's what Parliament voted for, and that's now what domestic British legislation says as well", Britain's minister of state for exiting the EU, Martin Callanan, told reporters in Brussels.

Five percent had no preference. She postponed a scheduled vote on the deal in December after it became clear she would lose.

As the Commons returns from its festive break Theresa May will ramp up efforts to win round rebels ahead of the crunch vote this month on her Brexit deal.

The defeat highlights May's weak position as leader of a minority government, a divided party, and a critical parliament just days before she is due to hold a pivotal vote on whether to approve the Brexit deal she has negotiated with the EU.

She also alleged her deal was the only one that respects the UK's 2016 referendum result, in which 52 percent of Britons voted to leave the EU.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke for 40 minutes by phone on Thursday at the German leader's request. Mr Varadkar offered Mrs May an assurance of sorts by declaring "We're happy to offer reassurances and guarantees to the United Kingdom, but not reassurances and guarantees that contradict or change what was agreed back in November".

"What we really need is some decisive action: the PM should put her shoddy deal to the country and ask people if they want Brexit now they know what it looks like or whether they'd rather stick with the safety and security of partnership in the European Union".

Mr Boles was one of 20 Tory MPs who joined forced with Labour to inflict another humiliating defeat on Theresa May - prompting outrage from Leave supporters.

A previous amendment by Grieve that the Commons voted through before Christmas means that any statement that follows a defeat is in itself amendable - allowing MPs to put forward their own alternatives for the future of the Brexit process.

Government sources, cited by the Guardian, said that potential financial issues posed by the amendment would be "low down the list" in terms of difficulties Britain would face in case of a no-deal Brexit, suggesting that more emergency legislation would probably be needed in such a scenario, where the government could attempt to restore these powers.
