A local leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany was attacked and wounded by several people in the northwestern city of Bremen, an assault that drew condemnation yesterday from some of the party's fiercest opponents. He was left unconscious after being ambushed by his assailants on Monday evening, the BBC reported.

AfD distributed a photo of Mr Magnitz lying on a hospital trolley, showing a bloody, gaping wound on his head and his right eye bruised and swollen. Authorities have said they have little doubt the assault was politically motivated.

The incident is the eighth in a string of attacks against offices and politicians affiliated with AfD, a right-wing party in Germany that is gaining momentum with its anti-immigration platform, according to Germany's The Local.

The party thanked a construction worker for coming to his aid and said Magnitz was attacked immediately after he left a New Year reception in Bremen's Kunsthalle art museum. He was beaten to the ground and knocked unconscious with a wooden implement.

AfD views the country's established political parties with contempt, and the feeling is mutual.

Police have been stationed outside Magnitz's hospital room to protect him against further attacks and to interview him as soon as he is able to speak with officers, The Guardian explained.

"Violence should never be a means for political disputes - totally regardless against whom or what the motives for it are. Whoever carries out such a crime has to be punished accordingly".

The AfD entered Germany's parliament with nearly 13 per cent of the vote in September 2017, making it the strongest opposition party in the Bundestag lower house.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier wrote to Magnitz to express his "consternation" over the attack.

Last week, an explosion outside one of its offices in the eastern town of Doebeln damaged windows and doors. Saxony holds a state election in September.

Magnitz, who is a member of the Germany's lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, regained consciousness after arriving at the hospital, but couldn't recall any details about the attack. In the statement, published on their website, they also accused the left-wing party Die Linke as well as the Social Democrats and the Greens of supporting Antifa and their attacks.
