The picture showed the 18 white learners in the classroom all occupying a single large desk in the middle of the classroom, while the four black children in the class occupied one desk in a corner at the far end of the classroom.

"They created a group parents and teachers group chat on WhatsApp a year ago".

"It is outrageous that a classroom in 2019 can be racially segregated, which only serves to teach young children from day one to see each other as different and separate".

Premier Job Mokgoro said he had noted with shock the images which were widely circulated, "depicting different seating spaces allegedly allocated for black and white learners" at the school.

Social media users said the picture evoked memories of the apartheid system that promoted racial segregation and oppression in South Africa.

After meeting school staff and education department officials, Mr Lehare confirmed that the form teacher in question had been suspended.

The woman, who was not named, told TimesLIVE: 'This was meant to be an exciting day for me but it's not.

There have been calls to shut down the private school while others said it was proof that racism was still rampant in everyday life across South Africa.

"Rather what becomes painful is that there are black people who still insist that racism has ended and who think that blacks and whites can have peaceful relations that do not have undertones of racism".

"On behalf of the department, I wish to condemn in its strongest terms any allegation of racism in our schools which contradict the constitution of our country".

'This is impossible so long as white people have power, what therefore is needed is to change the existing power dynamics such that black people can have dignity.

The removal appears to be as a result of fears surrounding safety, amid protests gathering momentum outside the school which appear to be led by EFF members. "Around 9 o'clock the class teacher posted the picture saying they are settling well at school".
