In terms of size, the new CLA measures 4688mm long, 1830mm wide, 1439mm tall and has a 2729mm wheelbase. While the A-Class only gets multilink rear suspension on the all-wheel-drive model (the front-drive models with wheels smaller than 19 inches are saddled with a torsion-beam design), all CLA-Class models will have multilink rear suspension.

For its initial launch in the United States, the all-new CLA only gets one engine option for the meantime. Yet the CLA Class is an important model for Mercedes-Benz nonetheless.

The new CLA-Class's interior appears to be lifted right out of the A-Class, with two free-standing, monolithic screens for instrumentation and infotainment. The current model starts at $34,095, and we expect the new one will be at least as much, and probably a little more, and it'll be above the A-Class (which hasn't been priced yet, either). Drag coefficient is 0.23. Legroom, however, is broadly similar to the previous model's and the boot has shrunk by 10 litres to 460 litres.

On display at the Las Vegas Convention Center is the CLA 250, equipped with a four-cylinder gasoline engine that develops 225 hp and 350 Nm of torque when coupled to a 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission.

Mercedes performance arm AMG is also working on a range-topping CLA 45 model, featuring the most highly tuned, 421hp version of the M260 2.0-litre petrol engine. The CLA will also benefit from 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

Starting with the design, the new CLA now embodies the same design language that debuted with the CLS and looks like a smaller version of it, which is a compliment. MBUX is Mercedes-Benz's latest and greatest infotainment software, created to replace the old turn-dial menu-based system. The voice-control system, which the user activates by saying "Hey, Mercedes", is now able to answer complex questions like "What child-friendly Asian restaurants are nearby that are neither Chinese nor Japanese?"

We were impressed by the refinement, chassis, powertrain, and tech found in the new A-class, and the second-gen CLA looks to improve further on all of the A's strong points.

Also on offer here is a smart new gesture control system that can detect whether the driver or passenger is using it, while Merc's Energising Coach takes the Mercedes-Benz climate, massage, lighting and musical "wellness programme" a step further by syncing with and making recommendations based on data from certain compatible Garmin wearables, including the new Mercedes-Benz vivoactive 3 Smartwatch that also made its debut at the CES show. The twin power bulges in the hood hark back to the 300SL Gullwing sports auto.
