At the event, a young girl presented William with a handmade birthday card for the mother of three.

But, in a lighter moment, he was given a birthday card to pass on to his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, who turned 37 on Wednesday.

The Duke of Cambridge became Patron of their #30YearsSavingLives campaign which aims to highlight the charity's vital work in delivering life-saving treatment across London, and raise support for the development of new facilities.

2010: Kate's 28th was, once again, celebrated at the Middleton home with her family and royal beau.

What happened: The Duchess of Cambridge will have a low-key day as her husband, Prince William, "attends an important engagement", Page Six reports.

Kensington Palace thanked the public for their "lovely messages".

Prince William and Kate Middleton married at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29, 2011.

Royal watchers are well aware of Prince George's love of aircrafts, too, and as such the eldest of the three was gifted a plastic helicopter.

"Louis will be chewing that before long", Prince William revealed of his eight-month-old son, before adding that his helicopter-mad older son George would also be thrilled.

The Duchess of Cambridge will undertake her first duty of the year on Tuesday 15 January, when she will visit the King Henry's Walk Garden in Islington to see how the project brings people together through gardening and food growing.

She was christened at the parish church of St Andrew's Bradfield in Berkshire on June 20 1982.

During her time there, she represented the college at tennis, hockey and netball.
