"It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money!", the tweet says.

It is not clear whether Trump was referring to money already approved which FEMA is distributing or to future funds. The agency has so far not responded to news media requests for comment. Calls to the agency were answered by this recording: "Due to the federal funding hiatus we are not able to return voice mail messages about general press queries".

Democrats blasted the president's tweet.

It is unclear which disbursements, if any, will be impacted by the president's announcement.

A home burns as the Camp Fire raged through Paradise, California in November.

FEMA is running on a thin staff because of the partial government shutdown. The window to apply for this aid closes January 31.

Just before his tweet at 10.25am, Eastern time, the cable network's "Fox & Friends" programme - a Trump favourite - had extensive coverage of California matters. Their request was not considered past year and the new Congress has not taken up a disaster aid package. That money trickles at a slower rate, Lemaitre said.

California Republican lawmakers were also critical of Trump's threat. These are survivors who right now, politics is the last thing on their mind. He praised Trump then for quickly providing disaster relief money in the past.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called on House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to join her in condemning the president's comments, saying that President Trump's "threat insults the memory of scores of Americans who perished in wildfires past year and thousands more who lost their homes". Kamala Harris (D-CA) - a likely presidential contender in 2020 - saying Trump should fight climate change, and Sen.

U.S. President Donald Trump can not withhold disaster relief once an emergency has been declared, federal statutes show, despite the Republican's tweet on Wednesday that he had ordered the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to cease helping victims of last year's California wildfires.

In November, the deadliest USA wildfire in a century leveled the California town of Paradise, killing 86 people and destroying about 14,000 homes. We lost 86 people.

Trump's grasp of forest issues has come under question.

McCarthy, of California, says he agrees with Trump that better forest management could mitigate California's deadly and destructive wildfires. They added that a "Twitter war" between Trump and Newsom was "not helpful".

The newly elected governor stated he, along with the governors of Washington and OR sent a letter to the federal government asking for their help in relief efforts.

The federal government is the largest landowner in all three states. I hear you, I get it. "If the president were serious about addressing wildfire, he would recommit the United States to reducing harmful emissions rather than attacking wildfire victims and referring to climate change as a hoax". "These last two years have been devastating".

State and local agencies control only three percent, and the rest is privately controlled.

FEMA has disbursed almost $56 million to Camp Fire survivors and has been working with state officials on plans to remove debris from Paradise, which was virtually destroyed by the fire. That included stops in Southern California to view areas affected by the Woosley Fire, and a visit to the northern part of the state, where the Camp Fire devastated the community of Paradise.
