Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio agreed to become the Broncos head coach

Former 49ers and Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has agreed to become the next Denver Broncos head coach.

The report noted the deal will be for four years and include a team option for a fifth.

Fangio bested a field of four other interviewed candidates: Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak, former Colts coach Chuck Pagano, Rams quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor and Patriots defensive coordinator Brian Flores. The decision, on the surface, may seem perplexing.

The last time the Broncos won a Super Bowl, Gary Kubiak was their head coach.

Fangio has 32 years of coaching experience in the National Football League, including serving as the defensive coordinator for the 49ers during the team's 2012-2013 Super Bowl runner-up season.

"I like it a lot. Even though he's a tough love guy, his players love him, and I think that speaks volumes about his character".

When word got out that Elway had chosen Fangio, Bears cornerback Prince Amukamar a tweeted the hashtag "curse words" and Chicago wide receiver Allen Robinson II tweeted the broken heart emoji. He has served as a defensive coordinator since 1995 with stops in Carolina, Indianapolis, Houston, San Francisco and Chicago, where's he worked since 2015. However, Bowles has not signed a contract yet and was not officially announced to the job in Tampa, meaning he still could accept the role in Chicago. "That's what it comes down to for me", Stokley said. He does things the right way.

Despite the experience and accolades, Fangio had hardly been considered as a head coach prior to January. Kubiak retired after five seasons with the Broncos and a 25-year coaching career following the 2017 season citing health reasons.

Fangio replaces Vance Joseph, who was sacked on New Year's Eve after posting the franchise's first back-to-back losing seasons since the early 1970s. The group is led by Pro Bowl pass rusher Von Miller.

The Bears are slated to travel to Denver for a road matchup on their 2019 schedule.
