Tomic won the clash 6-3, 6-4, with both players preparing to compete in the Australian Open when the tournament commences in Melbourne next week.

"His game wasn't on song yesterday, I've got to be honest".

South African world number six Anderson is still battling jetlag after arriving in Melbourne following a title victory at the weekend in Pune, India.

It could have been worse for Kyrgios, a former Open quarter-finalist who has slipped to 50th in the rankings, and Tomic, three-times a second-week challenger at the season's first major. After the match he was optimistic of a bigger and better year around.

Incredibly, for two players who seem to have been on the scene forever, Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios have never played a competitive match against each other.

The insane conclusion to the match left some fans scratching their heads, while others were just glad it had come to an end. "Ranking that stuff is temporary, I know I can go out there and trouble Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, I'm not anxious about going out there and losing 3 and 4 to BT". I need to be healthy to have a good year.

Kyrgios, who lost in the second round at the Brisbane International last week, had a break point early in the second but was unable to consolidate with Tomic then breaking at 3-3.

The Australian's ranking is up to No. 85 in the world just ahead of his home Slam, while Kyrgios has dipped down to No. 51.

"I'm not entirely sure what I will be doing but I think there will be more things on than the Australian Open draw", he said with a laugh.

Tomic, who has been through numerous same dips and dives in his motivation and form as Kyrgios, was also pleased with how he is progressing.

"I guess I just have to play better at the end of the day".

"We don't want to hurt ourselves and go too hard, because we've got to play in five days, the important one", said Tomic. I didn't play a lot of tennis past year ― which was my own fault.
