Cars were wrecked and other buildings damaged by the blast on Rue de Trévise in the 9th Arrondissement.

The explosion occurred around 9 a.m. local time on Saturday as city police braced themselves for the 9th consecutive weekend of Yellow Vest protests.

The explosion is thought to have been caused by a gas leak in a bakery, according to French journalist Catherine Fournier.

Photos and videos of the blast on social media show a large building on fire with flames coming from its base and debris strewn across the street.

A Paris police spokeswoman said firefighters are now at the scene of the blast Saturday morning at the bakery on Rue Trevise in the 9th arrondissement of north-central Paris.

A police spokeswoman said several injuries have been reported but no deaths.

Police have encouraged members of the public to stay away from the area as emergency services attend to the scene.
