Michael Cohen agrees to testify before Congress after pleading guilty to fraud and deception

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, will testify publicly before the House Oversight Committee on February 7.

In December, Cohen was sentenced to three years for violating campaign finance laws when he made a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels in return for her silence.

The hearing will be February 7 before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, according to a schedule published by Democratic Chairman Elijah Cummings, making the president's former "fixer" the first former Trump confidant connected to special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation to cooperate with Democrats since taking control of the House.

Cohen said he will "give a full and credible account of the events that have transpired".

The public hearing is scheduled for February 7, 2019. He also pleaded guilty to charges of tax evasion, illegal campaign contributions, bank fraud and making false statements to Congress.

Regardless of what Cohen says, though, his testimony will surely result in a presidential temper tantrum from his one-time mentor, who has called Cohen a "weak person," and recommended that people not hire him as their lawyer.

A hearing could delve into the financial deals of the Trump Organisation as well as the Trump 2016 election campaign's dealings with Russian Federation, already being probed by the team of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

The announcement of Cohen's testimony is the latest sign that House Democrats plan to make oversight of every aspect of Trump's life a key part of their control of the House.

Mr Trump has denied the affairs and any involvement in the payments.

Cohen has pleaded guilty in both investigations and was sentenced last month to three years in prison.

"We don't want to do anything to interfere with the Mueller investigation - absolutely nothing", Cummings said.

The committee, then under the leadership of South Carolina Rep.

In a December interview, Cummings, D-Md., said on CNN's "State of the Union" that he wanted Cohen to appear before Congress as soon as this month and signaled that he viewed it as a matter of extreme outcome.

Cohen cooperated with Mueller's investigation after his August guilty plea, and his congressional testimony could thrust some of those still-private details he provided into the public sphere.

The newly installed chairmen of at least two other panels, the Judiciary and Intelligence committees, have said they want to speak with Cohen about his work on behalf of Trump.

Cohen testified before the House intelligence panel in a closed-door hearing in 2017, before his role in the federal investigations was fully known and when Republicans controlled the committee.

Cohen said that he would bury the reporter under financial problems forever, saying "what I'm going to do to you is going to be f*cking disgusting", and adding that it wasn't possible by definition to rape one's spouse, a comment he was later compelled to apologize for making. Richard Burr, R-N.C., said in a statement.
