Police investigate after U.S. woman in coma gives birth at nursing home

Police seek staff DNA over vegetative woman's baby

Phoenix police said Wednesday they are reaching out to the community to help identify a suspect for sexual assault after a woman who has been in a vegetative state for years gave birth.

In addition, the records reveal that the patient's last doctor's examination took place more than eight months prior to the December 29 birth, which according to Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson "took everyone [at the facility] by surprise".

The case has drawn outcry from the governor to the San Carlos Apache tribe in southeastern Arizona, of which the 29-year-old victim is an enrolled member, and put the spotlight on the safety of group homes and facilities that care for those who are incapacitated or severely disabled.

Hacienda spokesman David Leibowitz said police started collecting the DNA evidence on Tuesday after the facility got legal opinions it could not obtain the samples itself.

As for the potential of pregnancy: Even in a vegetative state, a woman's ovaries "can still respond to the fluctuations in hormones that trigger ovulation", Christine Greves, MD, an ob-gyn at Winnie Palmer Hospital For Women & Babies in Orlando, Florida, tells Health.

On Tuesday, the woman's family attorney, John Micheaels, said in a statement to PEOPLE, "The family would like me to convey that the baby boy has been born into a loving family and will be well cared for".

Phoenix police are pursuing DNA samples from every male employee at a private care facility where a patient in a vegetative state recently gave birth.

Hacienda HealthCare owns the care facility and said it welcomed DNA testing of its male workers.

Officials say they are committed to cooperating with the police to "uncover the facts in this deeply disturbing, but unprecedented situation".

PEOPLE reports that the documents state she has been at the Hacienda HealthCare facility for more than 27 years, almost double the length of time that appeared in previous reports. Nobody relayed the incidents to an administrator.

News of the birth prompted public outrage, including from Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, who called the situation "deeply troubling". The CEO of Hacienda HealthCare resigned this week as the provider announced new safety measures, including more than one staff member being present during patient interactions and more scrutiny of visitors.

Cops made the horrific admission as they continue to probe the shocking case at Hacienda HealthCare in Phoenix. "We can deliver babies without needing to push", says Dr. Greves. When they arrived, they found a baby who had been born to a woman who was "unable to move and unable to communicate".

"There's a lot of information we do not have". "Whether it's an employee or someone from the outside, the facility has an obligation to protect residents".

"I think when you've had somebody who's had multiple allegations from different parties, there has to be some way to track that", McFadden said. "We were not expecting this", she said.
