Dead, 14 Hospitalized After Mass Overdose At Chico Home

Mass overdose in fentanyl

Police say a "mass overdose" of the synthetic opioid fentanyl at a house in Chico, California, has left one man dead and 12 more hospitalized.

One person was pronounced dead on the scene, and 12 others were rushed to the nearby Enloe Hospital.

A dozen people were taken out of the house Saturday morning and brought to hospitals, the Enterprise-Record reported. "It certainly would have been far worse without the response and dispensing of naloxone by Chico police officers", O'Brien said.

"We knew Fentanyl had been moving West it really has been in other parts of the country where they're really seeing the greatest impacts of this particular drug", said Chico Police Chief Michael O'Brien.

According to O'Brien, eight people were admitted, four of whom are listed as being in critical condition.

The two officers were transported to Oroville Medical Center for treatment to exposure after they reportedly felt fentanyl effects, but both have now been released, reported Action News Now.

Police say they suspect the mass overdose was caused by ingestion of the opiate fentanyl in combination with another substance.

Authorities said "everything was consistent" with a fentanyl overdose, but testing was still being done to confirm the drug was the cause of the death and injuries.

"The residence where this incident occurred is being treated as a hazmat site", he said.

Police officers in Chico County carry Naloxone, a medicine used to reverse overdoses, which they gave to the surviving victims. It has not been confirmed, but police say signs point to poisoning from fentanyl, an opioid often mixed with heroin or cocaine.

Mr Standridge added: "It was a large, mass casualty incident for us".

It's not clear what drug the fentanyl might have been paired with, he said, but his officers have only come across it when it was combined with heroin. A report issued by the Centers for Disease Control in December showed fentanyl was the leading cause of overdose deaths in the US for 2016, the most recent year numbers have been released.
