Massive snowstorm pummels US Midwest, leaving 5 dead

While the storm will spare the heavily populated Northeast it likely will disrupt air and auto travel from Kansas City to Indianapolis and will bring the heaviest snowfall so far this winter to Cincinnati and the Ohio River Valley

While the storm will spare the heavily populated Northeast it likely will disrupt air and auto travel from Kansas City to Indianapolis and will bring the heaviest snowfall so far this winter to Cincinnati and the Ohio River Valley

A massive winter snowstorm that blanketed several Midwest states was a factor in at least five road deaths on Saturday and forced the grounds crew to scramble to clear snow from Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City ahead of the National Football League divisional playoff game. In Virginia, more than 33,000 customers had lost power. Bradley Horton, 62, of Topeka was killed after losing control of his pickup truck and striking the center barrier on the Kansas Turnpike.

He says a winter storm that brought heavy snow Saturday to parts of IN led to almost 20 vehicle slide-offs that state police responded to IN the Lafayette district.

In Kansas, a collision of semitrailers caused the death of a 41-year-old driver from Mexico, The Associated Press reports.

In a tweet Saturday morning, the patrol said it also had responded to 48 injuries, 723 crashes, 1,252 stranded motorists and 2,968 calls for service.

The highest snowfall totals were in Montgomery City, Missouri, northwest of St. Louis, which was hit with 20 inches of snow.

For Kansas City Chiefs offensive guard Jeff Allen, there was a bright spot hen a Good Samaritan helped pull his vehicle out of the snow after he got stuck en route to Arrowhead Stadium for the divisional playoff game Saturday.

Missouri was by far the hardest hit in a massive snow storm that stretched some 2,000 miles across the nation from Colorado to the Atlantic Ocean.

The storm froze bridges, knocked down trees and stranded drivers on blocked highways, including I-65 in IN and I-44 in Missouri.

The county's 26 trucks tried to keep roads as clear as possible throughout the storm. Parts of the state had received up to 15 inches of snow by that point.

Dozens of flights were canceled at St. Louis Lambert International Airport, which described the onslaught of snow, in a message on Twitter, as one of its biggest single-day winter storms in years. Philadelphia is predicted to get 1 to 2 inches of snow, and there is a possibility of light accumulation in NY along the storm's northern edge. The governor declared a state of emergency to hasten the deployment of resources and workers necessary to restore power.

It began to spread east into the Mid-Atlantic region, with between 5 and 10 inches of snow expected in the Washington area, including parts of northern and central Maryland, by Sunday.

State police said the surplus vehicle's driver died at the scene.

Police said Ronald W. Harris, 73, of Gainesville, Georgia, died after his vehicle was struck by two tractor-trailers. "By the time most people are waking up on Monday morning, it will be done". Photos and videos posted to social media show the storm's chaotic aftermath.

"Yes- we have decided the unofficial name of this storm is indeed #snurlough", Capital Weather Gang wrote on Twitter.
