In the two years since, there's another sentiment he still hasn't been able to shake.

Many said they are struggling with anxiety, including one man who said he now plots a safe exit whenever he goes out to a coffee shop or a store. "This can happen again".

In a decision that took almost six hours to read, Huot said a sentence of 50 years or more would constitute cruel and unusual punishment.

Canadian police officers respond to a shooting in a mosque at the Québec City Islamic cultural center on Sainte-Foy Street in Quebec city on January 29, 2017.

Six men, aged between 39 and 60, were killed when Bissonnette stormed the mosque and opened fire on Jan 29, 2017. - Aymen Derbali, who was shot and left paralyzed.

The six men killed were Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Abdelkrim Hassane, Aboubaker Thabti and Azzeddine Soufiane.

Bissonnette could be looking at the longest sentence in Canadian history.

"Charter challenges to the 2011 provisions had previously been denied on the basis that the judge was not forced to increase parole ineligibility for multiple murders", he wrote in an email. Even if the judge decides the sentences should be served concurrently, it does not necessarily mean Bissonnette would walk out of prison after 25 years.

Justice François Huot said a life sentence with eligibility for parole between 35 and 42 years into sentence is fair and just, and rejected calls by prosecutors to impose the harshest sentence handed down since Canada eliminated the death penalty.

In court, Huot has made it clear he is leaning in that direction and that consecutive sentences are "probable".

In investigating his computer, authorities found Bissonnette had spent months researching mass murders, US immigration and Islam. He told psychologists mass shooters such as Dylann Roof and the Columbine killers were his "idols". The records show he was anxious about an influx of Muslim immigrants into Quebec.

On the other hand, the judge said, Bissonnette had no previous criminal record, he pleaded guilty and he expressed remorse. "I don't feel like a stranger".

"We know unfortunately in our society many people. say Islamophobia does not exist - or it's a personal act, or he had some mental illness". Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Quebec City the day after the attack for a vigil outside the mosque.

Kenza Tarek, a Muslim student studying at Laval University, said there was a wave of compassion following the shooting. "It will be better for Afghanistan if we could get a peace agreement before the election, which is scheduled in July", the negotiator said, adding that there remained "a lot of work" to do.

"This was a very serious attack in a place of worship", he said.
