"Thank you to my fans for letting me be the best version of myself", she said, going on to recognize other strong female artists and also told fans "you can do whatever you put your mind to".

Dua Lipa accepts the Grammy for Best New Artist during the 61st Annual GRAMMY Awards at Staples Center on February 10, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. "I think do you girl as long as you do you and I do me will be good", she said.

Last year's Best New Artist victor was Alessia Cara, who presented Lipa with her award tonight.

"I want to begin by saying how honored I am to be nominated alongside so many female artists this year". Lipa was making a reference to Recording Academy president Neil Portnow's argument that women in music needed to "step up" if they wanted to get recognized for their accomplishments. "You'll be hearing from me soon", she said.

Her sixth single "New Rules", which came off her self-titled debut studio album, was her first number one in Britain - and the first by a female solo artist to top the United Kingdom charts since 2015's "Hello" by Adele.

Following the translated dig by Lipa, Portnow took the Grammy stage later in the night to address diversity, inclusion and what the future holds as his tenure comes to a close.
