Netanyahu Confirms Latest Israeli Strike in Syria

Netanyahu has said in recent weeks that Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks in Syria over the past several years and would ramp up its fight following the planned withdrawal of USA troops from the country.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Tuesday that Israel had carried out an artillery attack in Syria on Monday night.

Benjamin Netanyahu has employed harsh rhetoric against Iran for years, but he went a step further on Wednesday, saying that Arab countries participating in a Middle East conference in Warsaw "are sitting down together with Israel in order to advance the common interest of war with Iran".

Speaking to Netanyahu, bin Alawi said: "People in the Middle East have suffered a lot because they have stuck to the past".

Despite the large showing, a number of high-profile countries did not send their top representatives amid ongoing tension between the United States and Europe over Trump's decision to withdraw from a 2015 nuclear deal with the Iranian government. It will also include discussion on the growing influence of Iran in the region.

"The result of this conference ideally would be a demonstration of Iranian isolation and unity amongst American allies in Europe and the Middle East", said William Wechsler, senior adviser for Middle East programs at the Atlantic Council in Washington.

Oman hosted the Israeli leader in October and several high-ranking Israeli ministers have also made visits to countries in the Gulf over the past year.

Netanyahu - who has been trying to play up his diplomatic gains ahead of Israel's April election - has frequently hinted at warmer ties with Gulf Arab states. "Now we say, this is a new era, for the future".

Several million Yemenis face starvation and the country has suffered one of the worst cholera outbreaks in modern times as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates - backed by the U.S. - seek to bomb and blockade the country's Houthi rebels into surrender. "But Netanyahu and Gulf countries are eager to focus on Iran".

Palestinian officials, viewing the current USA administration as having a pro-Israel bias, declined to attend the conference.

Walla reported that sources in the security establishment stated that the issue would be raised by Netanyahu when he meets Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow next week. In a joint op-ed published Wednesday morning on CNN's website, Pompeo and Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz wrote that the summit will deal mainly with the civil wars in Syria and Yemen, as well as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and other security-related regional matters.

Netanyahu has said the conference will not focus on Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts, since Pompeo and US Vice President Mike Pence - who will also attend the summit - do not deal with the administration's much-anticipated peace proposal.
