Two Nevadans have been charged in a nation-wide college admissions scam

Two Nevadans have been charged in a nation-wide college admissions scam

According to the federal indictments unsealed Tuesday, former Yale soccer coach Rudy Meredith put a student who didn't play soccer on a school list of recruits, doctored her supporting portfolio to indicate she was a player, and later accepted $400,000 from the head of a college placement company.

The FBI said parents were then told to invent an excuse so students could sit the entrance exams at facilities where staff had been bribed to turn a blind eye to cheating.

Coaches are accused of taking bribes to admit students at schools including Wake Forest University, Georgetown University and the University of Southern California. He faces a count of conspiracy to commit racketeering. Macy is not named in the indictment, but he is repeatedly refered to as Huffman's "spouse".

The documents posted by the US Attorney's Office District of MA said that the conspiracy was carried out by three means, including facilitating cheating on ACT and SAT exam in exchange for bribes, designating applicants from students without demonstrated athletic abilities and laundry money through the third party channels.

'I'm absolutely responsible for it, ' Singer said in court.

Prosecutors say the consultant represented to parents that the scheme had worked successfully more than 800 times.

Singer owned the Edge College & Career Network LLC, also known as The Key, and The Key Worldwide Foundation, the latter of which prosecutors claim is a purported charity.

But according to a filing from the U.S. Attorney's office for the district of ma published today, they regularly stoop to a tactic that apparently works: Photoshopping their kids' faces into photos of athletes doing sports, in hopes that they can be "recruited" by coaches at schools of their choice as a backdoor to admission.

Gordon Ernst - who once taught former first lady Michelle Obama and her daughters Malia and Sasha - was accused of conspiracy to commit racketeering when he was the tennis coach at Georgetown University.

Singer was paid about $25 million by parents to help their children get into colleges, said Andrew Lelling, the USA attorney for MA.

While administrators of college entrance exams are implicated, no students or universities were charged. The accusations say some of the efforts attempted to get athletic scholarships and others paid for high test scores.

The multi-paged criminal complaint reads that Riddell conspired with Singer from 2011 to 2019.

Parents would pay Singer to have someone take an SAT or ACT exam for their child or correct the test afterward, Lelling said.

"In return for bribes, these coaches agreed to pretend that certain applicants were recruited, competitive athletes, when, in fact, the applicants were not".

In most cases the students did not know their admission was contingent on a bribe, officials said.

He added, "For every student admitted through fraud, an honest genuinely talented student was rejected".
