Firebomb on Temple Mount sparks unrest as Israeli police close entrances to site

Three people were arrested in connection with the firebomb and the Temple Mount compound was cordoned off. Riots between Palestinians and Israeli police broke out as worshipers already at the site were escorted out.

Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said Israel "will not allow a religious war to be caused on Temple Mount" and warned any attempt to "damage Israeli sovereignty on Temple mount" will be met with the "fierce resistance" of Police, Ynet reported on Tuesday.

Worshippers vowed to continue to hold all prayers outside the gates until the police reopen them and allow free access for worship inside the compound. Two Palestinian minors were arrested and police were seen shoving and wrestling several people to the ground.

The Waqf, the Islamic endowment body tasked with managing the holy site, said that the compound had been opened for dawn prayers attended by worshipers without incident.

Video spread online of scuffles between police and Palestinians before the site was cleared.

Saif said incidents in Jerusalem was as a result of silence of the global community before the violation of all worldwide agreements and human rights.

The closure of the sacred compound also drew censure from Jordan, the custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem.

Meanwhile Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called on "the whole world to react to Israel's brazen attacks on our scared land".

Violent altercations have erupted on several occasions over past weeks as thousands of worshipers have forced their way in to the contested area for Friday prayers. The gate had been closed by Israel in 2003 because it said that a Hamas-linked organization had taken control of the site and was acting against the interests of the Jewish State.

The Waqf says that because the heritage group is now defunct, the council should regain full access to the building like any other in the holy esplanade.

Demonstrations have devolved into standoffs with police in recent weeks.

Officials in Jordan have confirmed that they are in negotiations with Israel to resolve the dispute.

Also on Tuesday night, in a separate incident, a Palestinian man was fatally shot by Israeli forces during clashes in the West Bank town of Salfit near Ramallah.
