Mumbai foot overbridge collapse near CST railway station Structural audit report deemed FOB'fit to use six months ago

The FOB, which is taken by hundreds of commuters everyday, was reported to have collapsed on Thursday evening. Injured persons have been shifted to Gokuldas Tejpal (GT), St George and LTMG hospital at Sion.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he was "pained" to hear of the tragedy, and spoke to BMC Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and Mumbai Police and instructed them to ensure speedy relief efforts. "Railway Minister's tall claims of audit have failed time and again. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal must resign or be sacked", he said on Twitter.

Governor of Maharashtra, CH. Vidyasagar Rao, said: "I convey my deepest condolences to the next of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident". Some motorists who were passing beneath the bridge were among those injured, the official said.

The Railway Ministry said that the bridge belonged to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), but the Ministry is extending all support to the victims. "During the audit, "minor repairing" was consulted for this bridge". A structural audit of the bridge had earlier been done&it was found to be fit. "An FIR should be lodged under section 302".

Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant said: "This is not the time to play the blame game". Whoever is responsible will not be spared.

"As per the information received, a part of foot over bridge near CSMT station in Mumbai collapsed". Some of the injured are those who were walking on the bridge, while some are those who were underneath it when the bridge came crashing down.

Ranajana Tambe (40) and Apurva Prabhu (35) were nurses at GT hospital and had been working since 2005, said nurses at the GThospital said.

The incident occurred as the bridge was reportedly overloaded with commuters hurrying to their homes, said the BMC Disaster Control Room.

The bridge, which connected the area near the Times of India building with the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus railway station, was commonly called "Kasab bridge" as the 26/11 Mumbai attack terrorist passed through it during the strike. Injured have been shifted to hospital. Rail traffic remained unaffected. "Senior officers are on spot", Mumbai police had tweeted at 7.46 pm. It is a public FOB, and not a railway FOB. "Railway traffic is not affected", said a Central Railway spokesperson Sunil Udasi.
