The Latest: Senate votes to end US support of Yemen war

The Senate voted on Wednesday to end US support of the Saudi-led war in Yemen.

His legislation calls for an end to a US role in hostilities in Yemen, a nation of almost 30 million people at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula, where fighting between the Saudi-backed government and the Houthi rebel movement, backed by Iran, has been raging for four years.

The 54-46 vote saw seven Republicans join with Mr. Sanders and the rest of the Democratic Caucus in rebuking Mr. Trump, and sending a message to Saudi Arabia as well.

Hours ahead of the vote, the White House statement threatening a veto argued that us support for the Saudis does not constitute engaging in "hostilities" and that the resolution could undermine the fight against violent extremism.

Activists take part in a rally in front of the White House in Washington, DC, to protest against Saudi Arabia's actions in Yemen, on April 13, 2017.

The White House has already threatened to veto the legislation, which it says is flawed and could undermine the fight against extremism.

But its full passage would set a historic marker. Should it manage to successfully pass through both the Senate and the House, it would be the first time that lawmakers have tapped on the act to cease United States military involvement in a foreign conflict.

This decisive vote will end "the American facilitation of the Yemen war and the world's largest humanitarian crises".

The Senate has blamed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for ordering the death of the United States resident, and are unhappy with Mr Trump's response to the issue. Mike Lee, R-Utah, marks the first time lawmakers have invoked the decades-old War Powers Resolution to halt American military involvement in a foreign conflict.

"Our focus should be on ending the war in Yemen responsibly", he said.

"The fact is that the United States, with little media attention, has been Saudi Arabia's partner in this horrific war".

It is the second time the Senate has approved a measure that would curb US military involvement in Yemen.

The Yemen vote could be only the first of two major setbacks for Trump this week, as senators are due to vote tomorrow on a resolution disapproving of his use of his emergency powers to pay for a wall on the border with Mexico, even though Congress has not approved it.

The measure now goes to the House, which approved a very similar measure earlier this year, to be passed again.

In that case too, he has promised to use his veto.

Meanwhile, revelations that interests connected with the Trump administration were in negotiations to sell the Saudis nuclear technology have shed new light on the president's cozy relationship with the embattled kingdom.

Trump's support for Saudi Arabia has been a point of tension with Congress since the killing of USA -based journalist Jamal Khashoggi past year.

Some members of Congress have publicly stated that they suspect that powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was directly responsible for the killing, based on the CIA's conclusions.

"The bottom line is the United States should not be supporting a catastrophic war led by a despotic regime with a risky and irresponsible foreign policy", Mr. Sanders said.
