Top Sanders aide invokes nasty anti-Semitic smear on social media — and now she's backtracking

"In a conversation on Facebook, I used some language that I see now was insensitive", Belén Sisa, Sanders' incoming deputy press secretary for Latino outreach, said in a statement. Bernie Sanders's (I-Vt.) 2020 presidential campaign has apologized for asking whether the "American-Jewish community has a dual allegiance to the State of Israel", a remark that reflects a longtime anti-Semitic trope.

According to Politico, Sisa, 25, posed her question during a Facebook discussion in which she declared her support for Omar.

"I want to talk about the political influence in this country that says it is OK for people to push for allegiance to a foreign country", she said. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., because of her continuous anti-Semitic comments.

Democratic Party officials interviewed by The Hill said they have not yet decided on an alternative candidate, but "frustrations are mounting".

Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar was accused recently of espousing anti-Semitic views while trying to criticize Israel.

Sanders has come to Omar's defense amid the criticism, and suggested that a resolution condemning hateful speech that passed the House last week was meant to target Omar as a way of "stifling that debate" over support for Palestine and legitimate criticism of Israel.

It is a tall task to unseat Omar, however, considering only two House members from Minnesota have ever lost primaries. Even if outside groups won't tolerate Omar's anti-Semitism, her direct constituents have shown they have no problem "questioning" Jewish leadership; they tolerated Rep. Keith Ellison for several terms, and he had direct ties to anti-Semitic hate preacher Louis Farrakhan.

"Anti-Semitism is a hateful and unsafe ideology which must be vigorously opposed in the United States and around the world".

Bee also pointed out that Omar is just one of a group of freshman representatives that are not satisfied with the status quo and have brought to the forefront a number of hard and long-overdue conversations, including that of Israel and Palestine, and she encouraged Democrats to take control of that conversation.
