O'Rourke didn't just focus his campaigning on urban and suburban areas typically rich with Democratic voters - he traveled to all 254 Texas counties, committing to visit even the reddest, most rural places.

O'Rourke is heading to Iowa for several campaign events, including a stop at Northern Iowa University to stump for Eric Giddens, who is running for a special election for a state senate seat.

"This moment of peril produces, perhaps, the greatest moment of promise for this country", O'Rourke, 46, said in an online video.

"We can free ourselves from the distinction of being the country that imprisons more of its fellow citizens than any other country on the face of the planet", O'Rourke said.

Mr O'Rourke has represented Texas' 16 congressional district for three terms in the US House of Representatives. He rose to superstardom within the Democratic Party in 2018, raising $80 million and building a national following during his close loss to Republican Sen.

"Whereas Obama is from the tail end of the baby boom, Beto O'Rourke is quintessentially Generation X, weaned on Star Wars and punk rock and priding himself on authenticity over showmanship and a healthy skepticism of the mainstream".

Some had encouraged O'Rourke to make another run at the Senate again, challenging Republican Sen.

He took a well-publicized road trip across the American Southwest, stopping at colleges and diners.

The White House run will also prompt greater scrutiny of his policy proposals and track record in Congress. "It's a big part of why I'm running".

"I'm a capitalist", O'Rourke told reporters last month.

It wasn't the first time O'Rourke generated national attention for taking on Trump.

O'Rourke joins a widening field of Democrats who have announced exploratory committees including Cory Booker, Jay Inslee, Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, former U.S. Rep John Delaney, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, John Hickenlooper, Senator Kamala Harris, Senator Elizabeth Warren, Bill Weld, Marianne Williamson, and entrepreneur Andrew Yang. "I think I'd be good at it".
