Walt Disney Studios president Alan Horn reportedly met with James on multiple occasions to discuss the situation following his apology, and chose to reverse the decision.

Anyway, it now looks like Gunn will get to work on directing Guardians 3 after he's done with Suicide Squad 2.

But much of the "Guardians" cast signed an open letter past year seeking Gunn's rehiring; Dave Bautista, who plays Drax, was especially vocal in his support of Gunn, as a #WeAreGroot campaign gained traction.

Things are looking up for James Gunn.

Fleming reports "the decision to rehire Gunn was one that was mulled and actually made months ago, following conversations with Disney studio leadership and the team at Marvel Studios". "Although I don't support James Gunn's inappropriate jokes from years ago, he is a good man", Pratt said. Disney, a family company that doesn't truck with that sort of thing, fired Gunn, who was immediately contrite and took full responsibility for his dumb awful tweets. I deeply appreciate Disney's decision and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. "I think a lot of people who even made the decisions, they realized they made a harsh, rash decision that was probably not the best decision", he said. "Love you to you all".

After he was sacked as director, Gunn's next project became writing and directing The Suicide Squad, starring Idris Elba, for Warner Bros. and DC. "I'd personally love to see him reinstated as director of Volume 3". "I'm helping to decide what projects will be pursued outside of Guardians 3, where Vol. 3 is going to lead to and then what the next cosmic characters we will focus on will be and how that will happen". A Guardians of the Galaxy attraction has also opened at Disneyland.

Stars from the first two films shared their support for Gunn after his removal, including Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista, who claimed he wouldn't return unless Gunn was reinstated.
