The big-serving 2012 Indian Wells finalist will face Russian Karen Khachanov after he defeated countryman Andrey Rublev 7-5 6-3 in their fourth round match.

Speaking of their first meeting, Federer admitted the conditions of the match were tough but said Edmund still had what it takes to achieve big results.

"Him and Pete have such better nicknames than me, that's the thing I'm most jealous about", Federer said.

Edmund, who won the Indian Wells second-tier Challenger event last week, struggled on serve in the opening set.

"I'm going to get a ticket because this is just nice", he said, joking about buying a lottery ticket.

Nadal commented "I probably played a little bit worse today than yesterday", adding "but in general terms [it's] been a positive victory again".

They have not met since Shanghai in 2017, the same year that Federer beat Nadal 6-2 6-3 in the fourth round on his way to his fifth title at Indian Wells. Conditions are tough with the glare, and the jump of the ball is sometimes hard to find the rhythm and timing.

Federer, who was playing the British number one for the first time, won 6-1 6-4 in one hour and four minutes.

After stunning Kei Nishikori for a second time in three weeks, the Pole bounced Denis Shapovalov on Wednesday in three sets 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3. "Happy the way I played". It's nice to see what they have in the matches and really get a sense how much more we will see of them.

Dominic Thiem defeated Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 6-3 and will play the victor of the late fourth-round match between Philipp Kohlschreiber or Gael Monfils.

She will next face Elina Svitolina, who clawed out a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Marketa Vondrousova.

"I was relieved I got through that one", Federer told reporters after defeating Edmund. "It was 11 days of good practice".

Djokovic's loss came on the same day that women's world number one Naomi Osaka saw her title defense hopes dashed, falling 6-3 6-1 to Belinda Bencic.

"I felt like every time I was trying something different she was coming up with better shots", Muguruza said.

Raonic sent down 12 aces in his 6-4 6-3 win over German Jan-Lennard Struff to set up a clash with lucky loser Miomir Kecmanovic, the Serbian teenager progressing when Yoshihito Nishioka retired after losing the first set 6-4.

The 130rd-ranked Kecmanovic only got a spot in the draw when Kevin Anderson withdrew.
